Mellisa Lopez (Paramedic)
Our incredible guest speaker visited Orland High School on January 17 to share valuable insights about pursuing a career in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), specifically focusing on pathways to becoming an EMT and paramedic. Students can apply for an EMT program directly after high school, with the opportunity to advance all the way to becoming a paramedic.
A paramedic is a highly trained healthcare professional who operates within the medical model, with their primary role traditionally being to respond to emergency medical calls outside of a hospital setting. Paramedics are an integral part of EMS teams, often working in ambulances to provide urgent care. This field offers an exciting, fast-paced environment that is centered around trauma care.
Melissa strongly encourages any students interested in medicine to consider these paths, especially given the critical shortage in the field—particularly among female EMTs and paramedics.

Sean Liston, MD (Physician)
Our amazing guest speaker, Dr. Liston, recently visited Princeton High School on January 15th to speak with our MedEd students about corneal surgery and cataracts. For many students who are interested in becoming doctors but aren’t sure which specialty to pursue, Dr. Liston provided an “EYE”-opening presentation, sharing fascinating insights and images that truly captivated the students. His session sparked excitement and curiosity, offering a glimpse into the world of ophthalmology and its impact on patient care.

Dr. Shirley Rowland (Cherokee Elder)
Our incredible guest speaker visited Anderson New Tech on January 16th, where she shared her knowledge on traditional medicine, a practice that dates back over 5,000 years. She discussed the use of plants and herbs as natural remedies for treating illnesses. One hands-on activity included making rose water from rose petals, highlighting its natural benefits such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, anticancer effects, and antimicrobial qualities. She also demonstrated homemade remedies that she personally created. The students at Anderson New Tech were engaged and interested in learning about different pathways within the medical field, and they gained an understanding of the growing need for alternative and holistic medicine healthcare providers.
