Naloxone Distribution

Community Overdose Prevention Effort (COPE)

Healthy Rural California’s dedication to providing the necessary support and action to the communities across the north state has expanded to include a new project that focuses on the lives affected by the ongoing opioid crisis seen in the state. COPE, Community Overdose Prevention Effort, is a dedicated team in providing the framework and support to naloxone distribution projects across the community, including locations of healthcare delivery, correctional facilities, student organizations, and community-based programs. Working with the California Department of Public Health and Health Management Association, our new program hopes to bring more access and education to northern California.

Under California’s Naloxone Distribution Program (NDP), organizations with standing orders or prescriptions can apply to receive both nasal and intramuscular naloxone free of cost. In our community, there are established NDP recipients that range in delivery methods from events to clinics to client distribution and more. The COPE team aims to assist programs at different steps in the NDP application and approval process: maintaining or increasing already approved programs, helping organizations in the process, and recruiting new organizations to start NDP approval.
